A perfect Saturday in Boston—

First, we put our name down at Neptune Oyster since the waits are always an hour plus, even on a Saturday afternoon.

Next, Mercato del Mare’s 1pm oyster shucking lesson, you shuck all you care to eat and pay per oyster. The lesson is BYO as well and there’s a fairly priced wine shop across the street w/ a great beer selection. After the lesson we decided to purchase a shucking knife, we’ll see if it gets any use in the next 2 years.

We headed back to Neptune Oyster, after wedding talk over a cup of coffee, for the fattest lobster roll I’ve ever seen in my favorite cozy space. Too bad we were all oyster-ed out.

Finally, our afternoon was spent biding our time for a birth announcement and celebrating with homemade blini’s, champagne and Facetiming with the birthday girl.

Before we went on our road trip we decided our route from Innsbruck, Austria to Bellagio, Italy would HAVE to include the Stelvio Pass. In the Eastern Alps it’s the highest paved road (2nd highest in the Alps) and consists of 48 hairpin turns. By hairpin, I mean the tiny Nissan Micra we drove had to slow to practically a stop to navigate turns when there were cars passing on the other side. The drops left me speechless (normally impossible) and I was convinced we were going to fall off the mountain. I was not a pleasant passenger. By far one of the highlights of our trip!

Also, you need a sticker to drive on the highways in Austria or else they pull you over and charge you 100 euro, but don’t worry, the cops have credit card readers and sit at all the highway exit ramps on your way out of the country

Munich eats… what can I say, after 4 nights of Bavarian food you may want Italian too! Brenner was an excellent Italian restaurant, unfortunately I cannot remember where we had pork knuckles, just that it wasn’t Hofbrauhaus.

I used to focus international trips on big cities, but I slowly came to realize the small towns, and those areas in between, put a traveler much closer to the locals. In the U.S. though, I feel most at home in urban areas and Munich felt so much like Chicago it was kismet. I can only imagine how glorious it is during Oktoberfest, and I definitely plan a repeat trip.

We checked off Dan’s vacation bucket list item in Munich as well - “Be the only tourists in a place at one time.” Bars aren’t open in Munich on Sunday, we found the only one that was… those locals had been drinking ALL day.

Also they sunbathe nude in the park. Those Germans!
